How I became interested: (as of 5/10/04)

I became interested in Soapstone carving approximately 5-1/2  years ago when my wife Debra ( who is also Native American ) took me to a Pow wow.  I noticed some native art work that were of different animal carvings handmade out of soapstone.  They were very intriguing to look at because of the various shades and colors, almost marble looking.  I hesitated on buying a carving kit at first because of my previous artistic skills.  I remembered that back when I was in 7th grade I took an art/pottery class and found that I wasn't very artistic.  I decided to go ahead and buy a carving kit anyway.  It consisted of eight different shaped files or riflers and odd shaped stones with a bear pattern.  Then I went to work and much to my surprise, I was amazed at the talent that I actually have.  I  have also found it an enjoyable and relaxing feeling to actually make something with your hands, seeing the beginning, middle and finished product that can be enjoyed by many for years to come and also at the same time, knowing that you're carring on a native heritage.
